Flatbed scanning for figures and plates
The simplest approach is to scan directly into Acrobat to create a PDF.
This procedure assumes you start Acrobat on a computer with an attached scanner.
You will now be in the scanner driver for your device. These instructions apply for Epson scanners.

Click Preview
Use the mouse to click and drag on the preview screen to outline the useful part of the scan (with a little bit of white border)
If the page has only text: make sure Resolution is set to 400 dpi
If the page has drawings: make sure Resolution is set to 600 dpi (yes, you can switch resolutions within a single document)
Click Scan (and the actual scanning will happen)
