Flatbed scanning for figures and plates
The simplest approach is to scan directly into Acrobat to create a PDF.
This procedure assumes you start Acrobat on a computer with an attached scanner.
- Create a new PDF in Acrobat: File → Create PDF → From Scanner
- Choose the Device: that is connected to your computer
- Click Scan
You will now be in the scanner driver for your device. These instructions apply for Epson scanners.
- Scanner settings:

- Click Preview
- Use the mouse to click and drag on the preview screen to outline the useful part of the scan (with a little bit of white border)
- If the page has only text: make sure Resolution is set to 400 dpi
- If the page has drawings: make sure Resolution is set to 600 dpi (yes, you can switch resolutions within a single document)
- Click Scan (and the actual scanning will happen)
