Flatbed scanning for figures and plates

The simplest approach is to scan directly into Acrobat to create a PDF.

This procedure assumes you start Acrobat on a computer with an attached scanner.

  • Create a new PDF in Acrobat: File → Create PDF → From Scanner
  • Choose the Device: that is connected to your computer
  • Click Scan

You will now be in the scanner driver for your device. These instructions apply for Epson scanners.

  • Scanner settings:
Mode Professional Mode
Document Type Reflective
Document Source Document Table
Auto Exposure Type Document
Image Type for text and line drawings: 8-bit Grayscale
for color images: 24-bit color
Resolution for text: 400 dpi
for images: 600 dpi

  • Click Preview
  • Use the mouse to click and drag on the preview screen to outline the useful part of the scan (with a little bit of white border)
  • If the page has only text: make sure Resolution is set to 400 dpi
  • If the page has drawings: make sure Resolution is set to 600 dpi (yes, you can switch resolutions within a single document)
  • Click Scan (and the actual scanning will happen)
  • Acrobat will put up a small dialog box asking what to do about the Next Page. If there is another
