Significance (Top)

An outstanding early collection of Pleistocene fossils made by Homer C. White and son, Homer L. White, from outcrops in the vicinity of Baldwin Hills and coastal areas near Playa del Rey, Los Angeles County, California. Most of the collecting localities are no longer accessible.

Background (Top)

Homer White was a contemporary of Meals, Maxell, White, and Draper and may have collected with some of them.

Most of these specimens are from California, Los Angeles County, Playa del Rey, Palos Verdes Sand, Pleistocene.

An estimated 1,000 specimens, mostly mollusks.

Description of Collection (Top)

Approximately one (1) Lane cabinet of fossils containing this material is located in the west wing of the South Grand facility.

The estimated 1000 specimens have been unpacked, re-housed in archival-grade trays and arranged by collecting locality. Most of the specimen lots have been identified to species level.
