Significance (Top)

This survey was conducted to increase knowledge of the marine benthic habitat of northern and central coastal/nearshore California, i.e., "Outer Continental Shelf Planning" areas. The results of this study formed the basis for assessments and management decisions associated with the potential leasing, exploration and development of oil and gas resources.

Background (Top)

This study was supported by Minerals Management Service under contract number 14-12-0001-30388.
Principle Investigators:
Dr. Andrew Lissner - Science Applications International Corporation
Dr. Douglas Diener - MEC Analytical Systems, Inc.
Dr. Robert Kanter - MEC Analytical Systems, Inc.

Collection Location and Dates (Top)

This collection is housed in the Crustacea Collection Room. It was recurated September 2005. Thirty two ounce museum jars containing identified crustacean specimens in screwtop vials, were transferred to new cotton stoppered vials, labels were inserted to identify the material as belonging to this collection, and specimens were shelved in appropriate areas of the collection room by taxonomic group.

The original field survey was conducted in November/December 1987.
Approximate localities between:
41 degrees 56.63' lat N, 124 degrees 26.97' long S, for Eel River Basin
37 degrees 04.67' lat N, 122 degrees 44.02' long S, for Santa Cruz Basin
The above latitudes and longitudes were planned to be surveyed. Actual locations were recorded in LORAN-C.
Depth range:
91-607 m for northern areas
93-578 m for central areas
Soft substrate sites

Taxonomic Contents (Top)

The collection contains crustaceans, mostly sorted to species. All other taxa have been previously sorted and distributed to appropriate curatorial sections.

Documentation (Top)

A single blue, three ring binder labelled MMS CARP is located in Lelsie Harris' office (Polychaetes). The binder contains station and taxonomic data as well as maps of study areas.

Description of Collection (Top)

Benthic habitats within 3 California Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) Planning Areas were to be sampled:

Northern Area: Transects T1 - T10 [e.g., T1 = transect 1]
SB (soft substrate stations) SB 1 - 40 [e.g., SB 1 = soft substrate station 1]
HB (hard substrate stations) HB 1 - 10

Central Area: Transects T11 - T15
SB 41 - 57 (missing SB 43, 47, 52 - 56)
HB 12 -17 (missing HB 11, 15)

Southern Area:
not sampled

Annotations about "missing" and "not sampled" come from original station data and do not refer to the actual lots found during the September 2005 assessment. Presumably, no lots from these stations would be contained in this collection.

Station information available for hard bottom subtrates include: bottom depth, temperature, and salinity. Soft bottom stations include many more abiotic and biotic parameters, including biomass, taxonomic information, etc.

Lots are sorted and organized by species.
Benthic infaunal samples were collected using a 0.1m square Gray-O'Hara box corer. Core samples were collected using either a 0.1m square Smith-MacIntyre grab or a 0.25m square box corer.

Collection Inventory (Top)

Until September 2005 this collection was located on the north wall, between "echinoderm collection" carriages P and Q in the Crustacea Collection Room. There were 36, 32 oz. straight jars filled with screw-capped vials, ~ 45 vials per jar, occupying ca. 1.5 shelves. Once curated these were incorporated into the identified portion of the Crustacea collection.

Specimen Condition (Top)

Date 4: New alcohol needed immediately (specimens will otherwise be irreparably damaged) 3: Containers need to be 'topped off' 2: New alcohol needed within next 6-12 months 1: No curation needed at present

Container Condition (Top)

Date 4: Immediate short-term (less than 5 years) storage container replacement needed. Present containers are inadequate. Curate in the short-term with plastic buckets, whirltop bags, or similar. 3: Specimens contained in museum-grade long-term (greater than 5 years) storage containers. Jars need new closures (e.g. replace Bakelite and metal lids). 2: Transfer to museum-grade long-term storage containers. Replace or transfer to new jars and glass vials, replace cotton and closures. 1: Containers are museum-grade and meet highest curation standards.

Label Condition (Top)

Date 4: New labels needed immediately (original labels in poor condition, paper torn/worn, legibility poor). 3: New labels needed within next 1-2 years (original labels beginning to wear, pencil writing fading, low quality paper was used). 2: New labels needed are as a result of curation and accretion of collection. 1: No new labels needed at present.

Label Content (Top)

Date 2: New label or additional label needed because original label data is incomplete and supporting documentation provides additional collection data which greately enhances significance and value of each lot. 1: Label content complete. All collection data are contained on label.
