Here are some tips for searching our collections:
Too many results? – Try narrowing your search down by making a selection in several of the fields.
Too few or no results? – Try entering the word into the Keyword(s) field because it not only searches all of the other fields that you see, but also searches descriptions in our database that are not shown.
If you are unsure how the word is entered you can also try using an asterisk (*) after whatever part of the word the different version might share. For example, entering "braid*" will find braid, braids, braiding, etc. *Be aware that this will make the search slower.

Provenience:
The proveniences are sorted from general to specific [EX: North America, USA, California, Los Angeles Co., Los Angeles, Exposition Blvd]. We do not always have specific proveniences for our items so searching more generally (i.e. USA) will yield more results which can be narrowed down with more selections in other fields.
Note: Use "USA" for the United States of America
Culture/People/Style:
If you cannot find what you are looking for in the drop-down list then try searching for it in the Keyword(s) field.
Notes on format of the entries:
- A slash ( / ) indicates another way of spelling of the same culture name [EX: Micmac/Mi'kmaq]
- Parenthesis indicate another, sometimes more up-to-date name for the same culture [EX: Navajo (Dine)]
- A hyphen ( - ) indicates that the object is a derivative of multiple cultures [EX: Sioux - Cherokee (Tslagi)] whereas "or" indicates that it is either one or the other culture [EX: Sioux or Cherokee (Tsalgi)]
Material Type(s):
If you cannot find what you are looking for in the list to the right then try searching for it in the Keyword(s) field. The materials are described from general to specific.
Major general categories include the following:
- Ceramic
- Cloth
- Animal
- Plant
- Metal
- Stone
